Biotech in New England |
Largely due to the region’s overwhelming number of world-class educational and scientific research institutions—MIT, Harvard, Yale and others among them—the six states of New England make up the country’s second largest matrix of biotechnology development. Some of the world’s biggest and most respected companies are here, and the region welcomes new and established enterprises every year.
Massachusetts is one of the sector's primary hubs, with the majority of activity focused in Boston and Cambridge. More than 450 local companies currently employ approximately 30,000 biotechnology workers; based on the industry's growth curve, Massachusetts biotech companies will support for 100,000 workers by 2010.
Connecticut's pharmaceutical industry boasts one of the world's best growth records, thanks to generous government support and superior quality of life. The top four pharmaceutical companies in the world—Bayer Corporation, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, and Pfizer Inc.—have chosen to locate their research centers here.
New Hampshire is home to more than 50 biotechnology companies, with a heavy emphasis on the manufacturing of medical material. Most of them are located in the southern portion of the State, especially in the Portsmouth area.
Maine boasts more than 80 biotechnology companies, including Jackson Laboratory, the Foundation for Blood Research, and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute—as well as a number of product and service suppliers. Currently, there are over 650 products and services generated by marine, environmental and agricultural technology in Maine.
Rhode Island and Vermont, though relatively small markets nationally, have each acquired unparalleled expertise in specific facets of the biotech industry. Rhode Island is particularly strong in cellular medicine and tissue engineering; Vermont’s focus is environmental research and development (R&D).
